Xiaomi rolls out MIUI 8.6.12.29 beta with iOS personal hotspot recognition

Xiaomi has rolled out MIUI 8.6.12.29 beta update with new features and minor enhancements. The update has been pushed through OTA for all compatible phones, which includes the first generation Redmi Note. We are using Redmi Note as our daily driver and managed to get the update. However, it took several minutes to complete the download process due to the huge file size.

The MIUI 8.6.12.29 beta update has added a new feature with which personal hotspot is mutually recognizable by iOS devices. Hence, if you create a personal hotspot using your Xiaomi handset, the iOS-powered iPhone or iPad will automatically recognize them. The required option have been integrated into the Settings page. With MIUI 8.6.12.29 update, you will be able to export birthday reminders from contacts.

As you can see from the above screenshots, the version number is displayed as MIUI 6.12.29 during the download process even though MIUI 8 is displayed on the top. However, after the installation of the update, the version number gets updated to MIUI 8.6.12.29.

We navigated to the Updater section after te installation of the update and noticed the version number as 8.6.12.29 as displayed below.

Update: We contacted Xiaomi and was told that 6 represents beta update. Thanks to IPS for the clarification.

As of this writing, the MIUI 8.6.12.29 update is available via OTA for users in India. If you are unable to view the OTA update notification, you can manually check for the existence of the update by tapping Tools | Updater option.

The update is around 765 MB. Hence, you should make sure to download the update via Wi-Fi and not via mobile data. We would suggest you to either charge the battery to 70 percent or connect the AC adapter to power before downloading the update.
